Reggae History : The original riddim came out first with the ‘Natty Dread a Weh She Want’ produced by Tapper Zukie and featuring the legendary Horace Andy at a time when dancehall was overtaking roots music. This version was released on the Trojan label in 1978 and this track stayed at the #1 spot for over 3 months. This new remake of the Natty Dread Riddim is another contribution to keeping the roots spirit over the dancehall ‘wine and bikini’ spirit of nowadays, with the jamaican producer Bassa Aka Trevor Elliot. On this riddim we find cutting tracks with Errol Organs, Joseph Cotton, and many other authentic roots singers.
the story behind the new Natty Dread Riddim with Bassa AKA Trevor Elliott Producer himself :
‘Natty Dread A Weh She Want’ was recorded back in the seventies by the legendary Horace Andy. This song is one of my all-time favorite and when I decided to do a remake, it was because I’ve always wondered how this would sound from a female perspective. Enter Empress Cynthia Riley. I’ve worked with Empress before, recording Hurry, her biggest hit to date. She is a trooper in every sense of the word, through ups and downs, always bouncing back with renewed energy. I turned to the maestro, Small Axe to build the riddim that would do justice to this iconic tune. So far the response to the natty Dread CD has been very positive indeed.
